I close the shutters so I can work. I must protect myself from beauty, as the English from the rain and the Bedouins from the chamsin. You feel your brain emptying and lightening; the long day absorbs it. Today I understood why Homer was blind; if he had had eyes he wouldn’t have written anything. He saw once, for a limited period of time, then saw no more. In Greece, alas, if you want to see all the time you must keep narrowing the diaphragm, as one does in photography.” George Seferis: A Poet’s Journal: Days of 1945-1951, p.52-53 Sabrina Balassa’s elegant and beautiful groupings of photographs describe an imagined natural order – the tree can be doubled in stereo, the clouds can reside beneath a lush, green horizon. The photographs are grouped in simple arrangements of twos, fours, sixes, casually but with quiet suggestiveness. How powerful then are these small rectangles of paper – trees separated can be brought together, branches against a sky become an abstract ink drawing with no knowledge of where the branches join the trunk of the tree and where the tree sits on the land. Each group of photographs is a snatch of a melody, a fragment of a song and we are invited to hum along.
